Well, as they say, I saw it through to the end ...
I was asked to be an Observer at the Recount of the Ballots and leaned over the shoulder of the Official Counters for Monday and Tuesday. The result of the recount is that the number of votes for many of the Candidates changed but it had no effect on the results of the election.
It was, however, an event of great Drama as the Ballots were counted Ward by Ward and the Vote shifted slightly one way and the next. I am glad that I participated and had a chance to see Democracy in action. I can attest, in Portsmouth, your vote is well cared for and jealously guarded.

Portwalk parking plans proposed
My spirits soared when I read the piece by Adam Leech (November 09, 2007). Building a parking structure under the new "Portwalk" project is a good idea. This proposed (underground) solution by the EDC makes sense for our needs today and shows great vision. It's no secret that Parking structures 'fit' poorly in our historic downtown. Parking garages break up the scale of the surrounding buildings and break up the rhythm of the shops and store fronts.
Bravo EDC!
Do you think it's time to look at the parking plan for the Westin Hotel Project?

Election Result
Well, that didn't work out quite the way that I planned.
Thank you all for your support.
My head is still spinning and I don't have any idea what I am going to do next, but I will let you know as soon as it comes to me.

Get Out the Vote!
It is easy to point out the hyper-reality of my thinking right now but, Young Adam Leech of the Herald says, "If recent trends hold true, less than one-third of all registered voters in the city will vote in the municipal elections Tuesday."
Tell me it isn't true.
You can read it your self at ...

Identity Crisis
Today's Herald ran a 'guy in the street' spot with John from Greenland who, when asked, "... what's the most important issue facing Portsmouth?", talks about Historical preservation.
What's not to like about this?
And the Point is... ?
Residents of the boroughs are searching for a sense of place and see our small City as their own.

Candidates' Night
The Citizens for Voter Education held a Candidates' Night Forum on Wednesday in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
I got the impression that it went pretty well for all the Candidates.
I am certain that it will be useful for all interested voters to watch.
It will be re-broadcast at 7:00 pm on the next two Saturdays.
In the introduction round I appear last (50 minutes in) and having sat through all of the others yada yada I had become a little edgy ... I have been told that I gave a 'Classic Dave' performance, one comment was, "Anyone with a pulse will vote for that guy".
To watch it on your computer click on the link http://www.cityofportsmouth.com/webcast/index.htm

Herald Candidate Profile
I had an interview session with Young Adam Leech from the Portsmouth Herald the other day ... I have been on pins & needles since then. Well, the piece came out in the paper today.
The Staff and many Supporters tell me it's just terrific.
I can breathe again! Why was I worried?

Campaign Contributions
Contributions ... I'm happy to get them.
With your support I can cover some of the cost for advertising.
Checks should be made out to daveadamsforcitycouncil.
Remember ... The City of Portsmouth requires reporting of Campaign Contributions of $100 or more. That seems fine to me. Contributions of $99 are more than welcome. Thanks to everyone who has expressed their support.

Signs
Campaign Signs ... I hate them too.I know that they are an important tool to get the voters attention.
I think that there should be a time limit on them.
To that end, I am going to have signs out for just one month.
Signs will be available for posting on private property on October 6th, so call or send an e-mail to show your support for
David Adams for City Council.

Dave Adams will be participating in the 2007 Labor/Portsmouth Peace Treaty Parade, don't miss it. Through a generous donation, we have secured a ride on a Classic Model A Ford and will be riding through the Town in style.
We are very pleased to have this chance to join the parade and show our support. Make sure that you get there in time to get a good spot and after the Parade join us at Prescott Park for a "Meet and Greet" party.

Parade salutes labor, Portsmouth Peace Treaty Sept. 23
PORTSMOUTH — On Sept. 23, Portsmouth will remember two grand city traditions: a salute to labor, particularly the workers of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and the tradition of commemorating the Portsmouth Peace Treaty.
The parade will begin at 2 p.m. and wind through downtown Portsmouth before ending at Prescott Park. Community organizations, musical groups, clubs, teams, decorated cars and labor groups are invited to participate.
The 2007 Labor/Portsmouth Peace Treaty Parade commemorates the Treaty of Portsmouth, the first treaty negotiated between two foreign powers on neutral U.S. ground, an accomplishment for which President Theodore Roosevelt earned the Nobel Peace Prize. It also honors the men and women of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the Seacoast's police, firefighters, teachers, nurses and others.
The parade is organized by the Labor/Portsmouth Peace Treaty Parade Committee in conjunction with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Metal Trades Union. For more information and registration forms to participate in the Labor/Portsmouth Peace Treaty Parade, contact co-chairmen Peter Somssich, 436-5221, or Paul O'Connor, 969-1799, or Stephanie Seacord, Portsmouth Peace Treaty Committee information director, 772-1835.

Foster's Article about the City Council Race
Three candidates file for Portsmouth council
PORTSMOUTH — Filing for city positions opened Monday with three incumbents making their bid for another council, along with three challengers.
Only one person filed for the School Board on Monday, but plenty of time remains to do so.
Councilor Ken Smith was the very first to file for another run at the city council.
"I really wanted to get in and I enjoy my job with the city council," Smith said."I wanted to be there early and show my commitment to this city."
He was followed closely by incumbents Assistant Mayor Tom Ferrini and Laura Pantelakos, along with challengers "Jack" Blalock, owner of Ferry Landing, David Adams, a veteran of the Historic District Commission and Eric Spear, vocal opponent of moving the Portsmouth Middle School.
Ferrini said he did not try to be the first one in line.
"I just like to file early in the period, because voters should know who's running," Ferrini said, adding that he looked forward to having a competitive field. "It's always better for the city, for any city, when more interested and qualified people run."
Pantelakos said she hoped to focus on seeing through to a finish those projects started during her tenure.
"Seeing those things finished would be among my goals," she said.
Incumbents Ned Raynolds and Chris Dwyer are expected to run again, but did not file on Monday.
Conspicuously missing from the list are councilors John Hynes, Harold Whitehouse Jr. and Joanne M. Grasso, who have all said they will not run for council posts.
Combined, they take with them some 44 years of service. With Mayor Steve Marchand departing to run against ... for U.S. Senate, at least four new, or relatively new faces will fill the void.
As of Monday evening, only Dexter Legg had filed to filed for a position with the School Board and no one had filed for Police Commission.
